Partner vineyards
Our Partner Vineyards consist of three unique sites that focus on specific varietals for our production. The vineyards we source from are within Santa Barbara County and each site has it's own specific microclimate.
Rancho Boa Vista vineyard, Ballard Canyon A.V.A.
RBV is a unique microclimate in Ballard Canyon, an emerging and premier A.V.A. for cool climate production of Rhone varieties in California. RBV lies on the western edge of the canyon which connects Los Olivos to the East and Buellton to the West. Oceanic influences allow for a significant diurnal swing during the growing season. RBV vineyard is protected by rolling hills in the Southeast and the Northwest. Sandy, rusty-colored clay soil allows for retention of nutrients and more importantly water.
We source Grenache Blanc from a rocky, sandy hillside in the Southeast quandrant of RBV. Our Syrah comes from a plot dedicated to Syrah on the Northwest edge of the property.
Camp 4 vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley A.V.A.
Camp 4 vineyard is located in the southeastern corner of Santa Ynez Valley, serving as the gateway to Happy Canyon. The Santa Ynez Mountains are a backdrop to this site owned by the local Chumash Indian tribe who have deep roots in California. The site is one of the pioneering vineyards for Rhone varietals in Santa Barbara County and has several varieties planted under vine. Loam soil throughout the site allows for water retention while the vineyard experieces very warm weather throughout the growing season.
We harvest our Roussanne for the Sans Souci Blanc which is also blended with Rancho Boa Vista Grenache Blanc. The Roussanne thrives here in a warmer than average climate and accumulates enough sugar to provide a rich, oily and honeyed style.
Santa Barbara Highlands vineyard, Santa Barbara County
Santa Barbara Highlands vineyard is one of the most unique and extreme vineyard sites in California. Situated at 3,000 feet elevation, this site lies essentially midway between Santa Barbara and Bakersfield. Enveloped by the Los Padres national forest, the vineyard is surrounded by almond and pistachio farms and although having many varieties under vine, produces excellent versions of Rhone-style wines. Resembling a quasi moonscape, the geography is unlike any vineyard one has seen. SBH vineyard has a diurnal swing of sometimes 40+ degrees per day. The elevation intensifies the exposure to the sun while at night helps retain essential acidity and slows maturation. A variation of clay, loam, rocky sand and alluvial soil make up the soil composition here.
We harvest two varieties of Grenache at SBH for two of our wines. The first variety is Grenache Noir, originating from Southern France. The bunches have small berries and tight clusters. Situated in sandy soil, these grapes are used for our upcoming rosé "La La." The second variety is Alban clone Grenache, which is rootstock from Southern France, more akin to the Chateauneuf du Pape Grenache clone. This Grenache variety will be put forth into our "G" bottling of red Grenache.
